‘Easy’ soccer pitches to be a 2010 World Cup legacy

(The Sowetan) Monday 6 April 2009

Danny Jordaan has announced a R81 million-deal partnership with the National Lottery Board to identify and develop artificial pitches in rural towns across all 9 provinces. The agreement signed is to see the construction of 27 artificial turfs in strictly rural areas resulting in three per province at the cost of R3 million each.

The sporting facilities will have change rooms and ablution facilities, perimeter and security fencing as well as training lights. According to SA’s 2010 Football World Cup Organising Committee, the criteria dictates for the sporting facilities to be on an existing sports complex where minimum earthworks are required and of the three facilities, one should preferably be near a school.

The first 9 areas identified in each province are:
Eastern Cape – Cacadu
Free State – Phutadijtaba
Gauteng – Orange Farm
Kwa-Zulu Natal – Ixopo
Limpopo – Thohoyandou
Mpumalanga – Siyabuswa
Northern Cape – Upington
North West – Moses Kotane Municipality
Western Cape – Grassy Park

The opening is scheduled for 30 October this year.

Former Bafana Bafana player and FIFA 2010 World Cup Ambassador Mark Fish says players develop their skill better on an artificial pitch because it is developed to be level with the ground.

"The maintenance is not an issue. They are quite easy to maintain. The football pitch is going to be level, which is the biggest bonus for the players. On a level playing field, the player can develop his skill better," said Fish. Fish described his role as an ambassador as primarily about getting people excited about the upcoming World tournaments. "My role as a 2010 ambassador is to galvanise and get everyone excited and to realise that they are going to be part of the Confederations Cup and the big one come 2010," says Fish.
