58 stadiums interested in hosting World Cup

(By NEW YORK - AP) Thursday 23 April 2009

The operators of 58 stadiums have expressed interest in hosting games in the 2018 or 2022 World Cup if the United States wins the bidding for either event.

The venues represent 49 metropolitan areas and include 30 of the 31 NFL stadiums — only Candlestick Park in San Francisco is not on the list. Two of those also currently are home to Major League Soccer teams: Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass., and Qwest Field in Seattle.

A minimum of 12 stadiums capable of seating 40,000 or more must be submitted to FIFA in each nation's bid. Venues with a minimum capacity of 80,000 are required for the opening and final matches.

FIFA will award both tournaments in December 2010.

"We are very pleased by the impressive response, and are certainly gratified by the enthusiasm and thorough understanding everyone has shown for this unique opportunity," said David Downs, executive director for the USA Bid Committee. "The benefits to a host nation, and particularly to the venue cities where the matches could be played, are numerous and lasting. Tourism, economic impact, meaningful global exposure and a legacy of being at the center of a FIFA World Cup competition await host venues and cities if we are fortunate enough to stage the tournament here in 2018 or 2022."

The United States hosted the 1994 event, which was the highest attended of any World Cup. Nine stadiums were used for the 24-team, 52-match. The 2010 World Cup in South Africa will have 32 nations competing in 64 matches, and the size of the field and number of games could grow by 2018 or 2022.

Among the stadiums interested in hosting games are the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif., site of the 1994 and 1999 Women's World Cup finals; Soldier Field in Chicago, where the '94 tournament opened; and such iconic college facilities as Ohio Stadium in Columbus, Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor, and the Cotton Bowl in Dallas.

Also expressing interest in bidding for 2018 or 2022 are Australia, England, Indonesia, Japan, Mexico and Russia. The Netherlands and Belgium together have submitted a bid for 2018 and 2022, as have Portugal and Spain, while Qatar and South Korea have applied as candidates only for 2022.
